Aaron Ramsdale: from Arsenal award-winner to fourth-choice at Southampton

Aaron Ramsdale, 28, who has been capped five times by England, is now the fourth-choice goalkeeper at Championship club Southampton and has not played a competitive match for five months. The former Arsenal number one moved to Southampton in August 2024 for £25m after Euro 2024, where he was an unused substitute for England.
BACKGROUND: RISE AT ARSENAL
Arsenal signed Ramsdale from Sheffield United for £24m in August 2021. He quickly established himself, making a series of prominent saves in his debut season – including a stoppage-time denial of James Maddison’s free-kick against Leicester City that former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel praised – and helped Arsenal finish fifth in 2021-22. In the 2022-23 campaign he was a regular in a side that pushed for the Premier League title, making 89 appearances for Arsenal and keeping 32 clean sheets. That season he was named in the PFA team of the year and won goalkeeper of the year at the London Football Awards.
THE DECLINE IN PLACE
Ramsdale’s standing at Arsenal shifted after a costly error in a 3-3 draw with Southampton in April 2023; had Arsenal won that match the club would have been in a stronger position in the title race. Four months later Arsenal signed David Raya from Brentford and Raya quickly claimed the club’s starting spot. Ramsdale lost his starting berth after four league games in 2023-24 and made only two other Premier League appearances that season. In one of those, against Brentford, he was at fault for a goal by Yoane Wissa; Arsenal recovered to win 2-1, but Ramsdale did not play for the club again and was sold the following August.
SOUTHAMPTON MOVE
Southampton paid £25m to sign Ramsdale in August 2024. The club had just won promotion and, under Russell Martin, sought goalkeepers comfortable playing out from the back — attributes Ramsdale was seen to possess. The transfer has not worked out as planned: Ramsdale finds himself completely out of favour and down the pecking order at the Championship club.
