Barcelona had been Alvarez’s preferred destination and Atletico refused to sell to a direct rival during the summer. According to the report, Barcelona have since moved on from the World Cup winner and seem unlikely to return for him next year—an opening Arsenal are ready to test.
Alvarez has been used mainly as a substitute in the ongoing campaign and is said to be open to considering a return to the Premier League, with the report adding that Chelsea were linked earlier but are not prepared to pay a hefty fee for the former Manchester City forward.
What happens next
The latest development is that Arsenal are prepared to make a renewed attempt to sign Alvarez in January, should circumstances allow.
