Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie could be sidelined for three to four weeks after suffering an ankle sprain following last weekend’s Premier League match against Leeds United. The Ecuador international made only a short cameo at the Emirates and then picked up the injury during a post-match warm-down session.
MANAGER UPDATE AND SELECTION IMPLICATIONS
Manager Mikel Arteta said in his pre-match press conference yesterday that Hincapie's injury “seems serious,” and reports now indicate a potential three- to four-week absence. That timeframe would affect Arsenal’s options at left-back for their Champions League group-stage match at the Emirates tonight against Lille.
Riccardo Calafiori has started at left-back and could continue in the role for the European fixture. The club could also ask Myles Lewis-Skelly to move into a defensive role, taking him away from the midfield position he has occupied this season, if Calafiori is given a rest.
CONTEXT
Arsenal began their European campaign with a 1-0 win over Napoli. The Lille game is scheduled to take place at the Emirates this evening.
