Azpilicueta retires after Chelsea career, cites study and need for a break
WHAT HAPPENED
Cesar Azpilicueta, now retired after spending last season at Sevilla, has described how studying alongside top‑level football helped him manage pressure and prepare for life after playing — and that he now needs a post‑career break.

Azpilicueta was speaking at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium as he collected a diploma in global football sport directorship through the PFA Business School. He joked he did not feel “entirely comfortable” at the venue and said he had other commitments now, notably his family, and wanted “to play some golf and enjoy life.”

EDUCATION DURING HIS CAREER
Azpilicueta told BBC Sport he worked towards an MBA in business management from the Berlin School of Business and Innovation, and holds a diploma from Harvard Business School in addition to his recent PFA qualification. He said study helped him during the Covid‑19 period and that doing courses “didn’t start because I thought it was the end of my career” but because he wanted to learn and improve.

He recalled using study to steady his nerves before Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League final in Porto: unable to take his customary pre‑match nap, he opted to study and later captained Chelsea to victory over Manchester City.

CAREER SUMMARY AND LEADERSHIP
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea in 2012 as a relatively low‑profile £7m signing, having begun at Osasuna and spent time at Marseille. He played 508 times for Chelsea across 11 years and is sixth in the club’s all‑time appearance list. He described having to adapt to different positions and managers, and said the club’s culture — where “every game and every trophy matters” — pushed him to the maximum.

He credited his off‑field learning with giving him the confidence to represent Premier League players during the pandemic and to help organise initiatives after owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned.

LOOKING AHEAD
When asked whether he could become a sporting director one day, Azpilicueta replied “maybe.” However, he stressed he needs time away from playing: “It was time to stop playing football because, even though I could probably still play, I didn’t have the energy to commit myself fully for an entire season.” He added that since leaving Chelsea in 2023 he has not returned to Stamford Bridge.
