WHAT HAPPENED
Barcelona have finalised the permanent signing of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, with the Brazilian undergoing a medical on Monday. BBC Sport had reported that a deal worth £8.6m (10m euros) was close to being agreed prior to confirmation.

Jesus leaves Arsenal after a spell in which he lost his place in the club’s pecking order, and Napoli had also been linked with interest before he opted for the Spanish champions.

KEY CONTEXT
- Jesus moved to Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 and, during his time at the club, scored 32 goals and provided 22 assists in 123 appearances.
- At Arsenal he had fallen behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as the preferred central strikers, with injury problems also affecting his playing time.
- Barcelona have already brought in two players from the Premier League this summer — Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) and Rodri (Manchester City) — and had also been pursuing Atletico Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, although Atletico are said to be unwilling to negotiate with their La Liga rivals.

WHY IT MATTERS
The transfer removes an experienced forward option from Arsenal’s squad and adds a player with Premier League and Champions League pedigree to Barcelona’s ranks. For Barcelona it is another recruitment from England this window, while for Arsenal it marks further squad turnover as they manage competing targets and outgoing moves.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- Whether Barcelona continue efforts to sign Julián Álvarez, given Atletico’s reported stance against negotiating with La Liga rivals.
- Arsenal’s pursuit of Álvarez — the club has been linked but reports suggest a deal is unlikely at this stage.
- Progress on other Arsenal departures and moves already in motion, including Fabio Vieira’s transfer to Hamburger SV and Ethan Nwaneri’s near loan switch to Borussia Dortmund.
