Barton to remain in custody before 2027 trial
September 7, 2026 14:43
Former footballer Joey Barton has been ordered to stay in custody after a judge rejected a renewed application for bail. Barton, appearing by video from HMP Liverpool, was remanded ahead of a further hearing in December.
He faces a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with an incident in Huyton on 8 March and denies the allegation.
KEY CONTEXT
The alleged victim is Kevin Lynch, 51, and the incident is said to have occurred at Fairway, Huyton, following a period in which the two men had been drinking at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Lynch, who has worked as a non-league manager and founded special education provider NexGen Academy, reportedly suffered serious eye injuries.
Last week Liverpool Crown Court agreed to adjourn the trial until 8 March 2027; the judge’s refusal of bail means Barton will remain in custody until that date unless circumstances change. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 11 December.
WHY IT MATTERS
Barton is a well-known former professional, capped once by England and having played for clubs including Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille. The case therefore involves a high-profile ex-player and has drawn public and media interest because of his footballing background and the seriousness of the charge.
