Bolt registers to play for Manchester Sunday league team
August 21, 2026 19:14
The Football Association's Full-Time website lists 40-year-old Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt as a registered player for Wythenshawe Vets FC, a veterans' Sunday league side in south Manchester. The team competes in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans Football League.
Wythenshawe have not issued an official announcement about Bolt's registration and the club has been contacted for comment.
KEY CONTEXT
Bolt is an eight-time Olympic gold medallist and claimed 11 world titles during his athletics career. He holds the 100m and 200m world records set at the 2009 World Championships. After retiring from athletics in 2017, he pursued football: in 2018 he scored twice in a friendly for A-League club Central Coast Mariners, signed with them after turning down an offer from Valletta in Malta, but departed eight weeks later.
Wythenshawe Vets are an over-35s side whose current squad includes several former top-flight professionals, among them Emile Heskey, Oumar Niasse, Antonio Valencia, Papiss Cisse, Stephen Ireland, Nedum Onuoha, Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater.
WHY IT MATTERS
Bolt’s registration, if confirmed, would link one of the most recognisable figures in world sport to a high-profile veterans’ Sunday league team that has already drawn attention for recruiting ex-professionals. It highlights the crossover interest between elite athletics and grassroots football and would add a notable name to an already experienced Wythenshawe squad.
