Break-up of Villa's Europa heroes leaves cracks for Emery to fill
WHAT HAPPENED
Aston Villa's starting lineup from the Europa League final has been heavily dismantled this summer. Several members of the Istanbul XI have already left or are set to depart, with Ezri Konsa described as set to join Arsenal for £51m and others, including Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, gone in recent weeks.

The club also sold Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain, saw Rogers' move to Chelsea reported as a £117m fee (a record for an English player), and faces an unsettled goalkeeper situation after Emi Martínez’s Juventus move collapsed and Villa signed Zion Suzuki as a replacement. Reported interest in Ollie Watkins from Al-Hilal could add to the turnover.

KEY CONTEXT
Villa’s sales are taking place against a backdrop of financial limits imposed by European and domestic rules. UEFA’s squad cost ratio (SCR) restricts clubs to spending no more than 70% of football-related revenue on wages, transfers and agent fees; Villa were fined twice for breaches (around £9.5m and £19.4m, the latter partly suspended after a settlement). The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules previously capped losses at £105m over a rolling three-year period; those rules have been superseded to align with UEFA’s model.

The club has already generated substantial income from player sales in recent seasons: just over £200m from Jhon Duran (£71m), Douglas Luiz (£42.5m), Jacob Ramsey (£40m) and Moussa Diaby (£50m). This window is expected to raise about £212m more if the Konsa deal is completed, including £9m for Lewis Dobbin. Villa’s latest accounts showed a post-tax profit of £17m for the year to 30 June 2025, after larger losses in the two prior years.

WHY IT MATTERS
The scale and profile of departures underlines that Villa must prioritise financial compliance and squad balancing over retaining the exact team that won the club’s first European trophy in 30 years. That turnover poses a significant challenge for Unai Emery: replacing multiple regular starters in a single window risks disrupting on-field continuity and depth as Villa prepare for another season at the top level.

The sales also underline the club’s position outside the financial elite; Villa’s recent gross spending was much lower than the biggest Premier League clubs, which constrains their ability to both hold onto stars and match rivals’ transfer activity.
