Brown and young squad impress as Northern Ireland beat Ukraine 3-0

WHAT HAPPENED
Ciaron Brown opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Ruairi McConville's knockdown. A first start for 19-year-old Kieran Morrison led to Isaac Price's goal to double the lead, and Brown's second — a header that evaded goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk — completed the scoring with around 30 minutes remaining. McConville, a 21-year-old Norwich City defender, was credited with involvement in the third goal when he allowed the ball to trickle over the line.
The back five kept a third consecutive clean sheet. Brodie Spencer and Terry Devlin impressed at full-back, while McConville and 20-year-old Blackburn Rovers defender Tom Atcheson were singled out for strong performances; Atcheson made his Northern Ireland debut in Wales in March.
COACH AND PLAYER REACTIONS
Manager Michael O'Neill described McConville and Atcheson as "terrific" and said "They have no ceiling, to be honest. They are both playing in the Championship at the minute but they are ready to go to the next level." O'Neill also praised Brown, noting the 28-year-old had "really grown" into a senior role in the absence of injured Sunderland defender Dan Ballard, and added: "He plays his club football in League One and he's a better player than that."
KEY CONTEXT
Only Sweden and France have beaten Ukraine in the past 12 months, underlining the significance of Northern Ireland's result. The win left Northern Ireland top of their Nations League group with seven points from three games.
