Caicedo and Henderson provide midfield balance as Chelsea hammer Bournemouth 5-1

Chelsea produced what manager Xabi Alonso described as their most complete performance of the season as they defeated Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday. Jordan Henderson scored twice and set up a goal in what was his second appearance for the club; he opened the scoring after 66 seconds and added a 25-yard free-kick, while also assisting Morgan Rogers shortly after kick-off.
Moises Caicedo made his first start of the season in all competitions and was paired with Henderson in midfield for the first time. Deployed in a deep role, Caicedo dropped into the middle of the back three in possession, allowing Josh Acheampong to push forward. He misplaced only two passes, posted the highest pass-completion rate among Chelsea starters and made and won more tackles than any team-mate.
KEY CONTEXT
Chelsea have scored 15 goals in six league matches but have also conceded 13, more than any other Premier League side so far this season and are still awaiting a first league clean sheet. Alonso praised Henderson’s overall display — “If he's able to score two beauties like today, we are more than happy for him,” he said — and stressed Caicedo’s importance: “You always want to have Moises on the pitch... I think that is something to build around.”
Additional detail from the match and squad: Henderson joined on a free transfer from Brentford this summer as experienced cover for a previously very young squad. Chelsea signed three players aged over 30 this summer — Henderson, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and striker Danny Welbeck — their first signings over 30 since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022. Romeo Lavia replaced Caicedo in a planned substitution during the game; Valentin Barco did not make the matchday squad.
Despite the convincing win, Chelsea conceded again from a set-piece (Evanilson scored for Bournemouth), underlining the defensive issue that persists even when the midfield pairing supplies greater control. With Caicedo in the side this season Chelsea have won 48.1% of their Premier League matches; without him that figure is 25%. Alonso noted the front three of Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are already contributing heavily to Chelsea’s goalscoring, helping make them the Premier League’s top scorers.
