Chelsea in talks to sign Atalanta defender Ahanor

Chelsea are in negotiations to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, BBC Sport reports. Atalanta have indicated they would consider selling the 18-year-old if a fee in line with their 40m euro valuation is met.
The interest followed Chelsea’s earlier dealings with Atalanta this summer, when the club recruited right-back Marco Palestra from the Serie A side.
KEY CONTEXT
Ahanor, primarily a left-back, moved to Atalanta from Genoa last summer on a three-year contract for a reported fee of 16m euros plus 4m in add-ons. He became a regular starter in Serie A, making 28 league appearances last season and making his first Champions League appearance in a 2-1 win over Club Brugge in September. In May he received an Italy call-up for friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece.
Chelsea’s manager Xabi Alonso has been reshaping the squad since his appointment in July, with high-profile arrivals including Morgan Rogers (a club-record signing from Aston Villa) and the additions of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.
WHY IT MATTERS
If completed, a move for Ahanor would be another example of Chelsea investing in a young, already-established Serie A starter and an Italy international at youth/senior level. The 40m euro figure underlines Atalanta’s valuation of the player and the scale of investment required for Chelsea to secure him.
