Chelsea's Lavia out to 'change narrative' after injuries

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia says he finally feels "free" and is determined to alter the way people view his time at the club after a run of injury problems. The 22-year-old has started the opening Premier League matches this season and is on the brink of assembling his longest uninterrupted spell in the team — he would beat his previous best of 518 injury-free minutes (including pre-season) if he reaches 60 minutes against Brentford on Friday.
Lavia has described overcoming the psychological toll of repeated setbacks as well as the physical recovery. He credits support from team-mates, club staff and people close to him for creating an environment that has helped him rebuild confidence and fitness.
KEY CONTEXT
- Lavia made only one appearance in his first season at Chelsea because of a serious hamstring injury. In the following campaign he missed 33 games, a reduction from 42 the season before, and then improved his availability last term by featuring in about half of Chelsea's matches.
- Manager Xabi Alonso played a role in Lavia's rehabilitation of confidence, encouraging him during a pre-season match against AC Milan in August to overcome the "mental block" of completing 90 minutes.
- Chelsea's midfield picture has shifted this summer: Moises Caicedo has so far been limited to 14 minutes of action this season, while Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City in a £125m deadline-day move. That has increased Lavia's on-field responsibility.
- The club has also adjusted its recruitment approach, adding more experienced players and breaking its transfer record with the £117m signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa; Rogers and Lavia previously played together in Manchester City's academy.
WHY IT MATTERS
Lavia’s return to sustained availability matters for Chelsea’s balance in midfield. As he re-establishes himself alongside captain Reece James, who has also come back from injury troubles, the Belgian provides defensive cover and character in a side reshaped by high-profile departures and arrivals. His fitness and form will influence how Alonso manages the centre of the park, especially while Caicedo has had limited minutes and the club integrates new forwards who have produced a strong start in attack.
