Cole Palmer has agreed a new contract with Chelsea that runs until 2034, the club announced. The 24-year-old England international was already contracted to 2033 but has been given improved terms in recognition of his early-season form and role within the squad.
CONTEXT
Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023 for a reported £42.5m and signed his previous deal two years ago. He has scored four goals and provided two assists in seven matches this season and has played more minutes than any Chelsea player so far. The new length of his contract places him among a small group of Premier League players tied to clubs until 2034, alongside Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Chelsea team-mates João Pedro and Geovany Quenda.
The renewal is part of a series of recent contract extensions at Chelsea: João Pedro signed until 2034 in August and Pedro Neto agreed a new six-year contract last month.
Palmer has been involved in building relationships on and off the pitch with teammates, developing an understanding with João Pedro and rekindling an on-field partnership with Morgan Rogers. He was also one of the few players involved in Chelsea's negotiations to sign Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m this summer.
INJURY AND INTERNATIONAL STATUS
Palmer missed out on England's World Cup squad after a season in which he played through a niggling groin problem and sought specialist advice about the need for surgery. He missed England's recent international break; former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has said Palmer "misses too many opportunities." Xabi Alonso confirmed Palmer is training and is expected to be available for Chelsea's Saturday game against Bournemouth, adding: "Absolutely. He's committed, but he needs to be fully fit to play."
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Alonso indicated Palmer should be available for the upcoming match against Bournemouth, with the manager emphasising the need for full fitness before international involvement.
