De la Fuente extends Spain contract to 2032
WHAT HAPPENED
Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente has agreed a contract extension that will keep him in charge until 2032. The move secures his role through the 2030 World Cup cycle, when Spain will be one of the hosts for the tournament that marks the competition’s 100th anniversary.

The agreement follows a remarkably successful period for the national team under de la Fuente, who has taken Spain from a December 2022 appointment to European and global honours in less than two years.

KEY CONTEXT
De la Fuente replaced Luis Enrique in December 2022 after Spain exited the 2022 World Cup in the last 16. Since taking over, Spain have recorded just two defeats in 41 competitive matches and claimed three trophies, including the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League, the 2024 European Championship and the 2026 World Cup. The World Cup final saw Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time; the European triumph came after a 2-1 victory over England in 2024. The side were also runners-up to Portugal in the 2024–25 Nations League.

Before becoming senior coach, de la Fuente spent nine years working in Spain’s youth teams, winning the European Under-19 Championship in 2015, the Under-21 European Championship in 2019 and a silver medal with Spain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. RFEF president Rafael Louzan — speaking at the World Football Summit in Madrid — highlighted de la Fuente’s long association with the federation, noting he has been with Spain’s setup for 14 years.

WHY IT MATTERS
Extending de la Fuente’s contract guarantees managerial continuity for a team that has rapidly rebuilt its standing on the international stage under his stewardship.
