Everton forced to move EFL Cup tie at short notice

Everton's Carabao Cup third-round tie with Wolves, originally due on Wednesday 9 September, has been postponed by seven days and will now be played on Wednesday 16 September. The swap was confirmed after UEFA published Champions League dates showing Liverpool hosting Atlético Madrid at Anfield on 9 September.
The EFL had previously scheduled Everton v Wolves for 9 September to avoid clashing with Liverpool’s cup tie the following week, but Merseyside Police policy preventing both Everton and Liverpool playing at home on the same night, together with UEFA’s fixture prioritisation, forced a late change. As a result Liverpool’s cup game against Tottenham has been moved to Tuesday 15 September, and Wolves’ Championship fixture with Portsmouth has been pushed back to 20 October, after the first international break.
KEY CONTEXT
- The EFL initially set Everton v Wolves for 9 September to steer clear of a Liverpool home Carabao Cup fixture that had been selected for a Sky Sports broadcast on 16 September.
- Wolves and Everton have congested league calendars: Wolves have Championship matches on 13 and 20 September while Everton have Premier League fixtures on 12 and 19 September, limiting alternative dates.
- UEFA’s Champions League schedule takes precedence over domestic rearrangements; the EFL appealed to UEFA to alter Liverpool’s date but the appeal was rejected.
- Because the Champions League and Europa League begin on different nights, the EFL now needs to carry out a pre-draw for the competition to avoid pairing clubs in European competition against each other.
WHY IT MATTERS
The change highlights how continental competition calendars and local policing restrictions can override domestic scheduling plans, producing late adjustments that affect multiple clubs and competitions. Short-notice moves disrupt planning for teams, supporters and broadcasters, and can create further knock-on rescheduling across league fixtures, as shown by Wolves’ Portsmouth match being deferred until October.
WHAT TO WATCH NEXT

- Whether any further fixture alterations are needed as European and domestic schedules continue to be finalised.
