Fernandez and Ndiaye show signs of promise on Man City debuts
WHAT HAPPENED
Manchester City handed new signings Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye their Premier League debuts in a 1-0 win over Coventry. Fernández, who joined from Chelsea for £125m, was promoted into the starting XI late after a teammate picked up a knock in the warm-up; Ndiaye, a £60m arrival, started on the other side of midfield.
Erling Haaland scored the only goal from Antoine Semenyo’s cross after Fernández supplied a through pass, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a number of saves to preserve the clean sheet.

KEY CONTEXT
Fernández and manager Enzo Maresca already worked together at Chelsea, where they shared trophy success, and Maresca used Fernández in a roaming number eight role. Ndiaye became the first Senegalese player to appear for City and completed more dribbles than anyone on the pitch. Both arrivals had very limited training time with their new teammates before the game; Maresca said Ndiaye had only two sessions with the squad.

WHY IT MATTERS
The match offered an early look at how City’s midfield rebuild is taking shape after the departures of Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico González. Fernández’s creativity and movement produced the assist for the decisive goal and he registered multiple touches inside the opposition box. Ndiaye’s dribbling and pace provided a different attacking dimension, signalling increased competition for starting places in midfield and wide areas.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- How quickly Fernández and Ndiaye adapt tactically to Maresca’s system, given their limited time in training (a point the manager himself highlighted).
- Whether Fernández’s late-game withdrawal and Ndiaye’s positional adjustments will change as they gain more sessions with the squad.
- The continuing involvement of younger summer signings such as Ayyoub Bouaddi, who replaced Fernández, and how they factor into the midfield options.
