Joe Riley, now 29, is combining non-league football with a new profession. He captained Warrington Rylands in a Northern Premier League Premier Division trip to Workington in late August, a match played at the Fibrus Community Stadium that ended 3-2 after Rylands had been 2-0 up and lost two players to red cards in front of 638 spectators. His side are due to host Hyde United in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday (15:00 BST).
Riley left Manchester United as a young professional after injuries limited his opportunities. While recovering from a final significant injury at League Two club Walsall he began studying for life after football and now works as a financial protection adviser, selling life, income protection, critical illness and injury cover, while still playing at non-league level.
