Harry Kane equals Peter Shilton's England caps as striker's youth story resurfaces
WHAT HAPPENED
Harry Kane made his 125th England appearance against the Czech Republic in the Nations League on Tuesday, equalling Peter Shilton's 36-year-old record as the most-capped Three Lions player. The Bayern Munich striker is also England's record scorer, credited with 89 goals in 124 appearances. He began his full international career by scoring 79 seconds into his debut and has featured in all four of England's Nations League games during this international break.

ORIGINS: FROM GOALKEEPER TO CENTRE-FORWARD
Kane's path to those international milestones traces back to childhood. At six, during trials with Ridgeway Rovers in 1999, a coach put him in goal for a shooting session — and the youngster produced a string of saves. Coach Dave Bricknell recalled the moment the club decided to try him outfield and later moved him to centre forward.

His goalscoring for Ridgeway Rovers and the Waltham Forest district side attracted professional attention. Arsenal brought Kane into their academy but released him at 11; Watford also passed on signing him. Trevor Bailey, Kane's manager at Waltham Forest, remembered his knack for being in the right place: "When he got a chance, guaranteed four out of five he was going to score or set someone up." Alex Welsh, a former Arsenal academy coach, said Kane had once been a "very competent goalkeeper" but that his desire to score helped make him a clinical striker.

SCHOOL, SPORT AND WORK ETHIC
Kane attended Larkswood Primary Academy and then Chingford Foundation School. PE teacher Mark Leadon described him as technically gifted with a great first touch and a strong work ethic, adding that Kane was also a capable cricketer who opened the bowling from years seven to ten. Childhood team-mate Luke Robinson said Kane was intensely focused on football and "always driven."

WHY IT MATTERS
Equalling a long-standing international appearance record underlines Kane's longevity at the top level for England while the scoring numbers already place him as his country's leading marksman. The youth anecdotes underline how his early versatility and determination contributed to his development.
