Jorge Jesus: Cristiano Ronaldo can return to Portugal squad
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has left the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the national team, saying the forward can rejoin if he wants.

WHAT HAPPENED
Portugal's 41-year-old captain left their Nations League camp after being an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Norway and then being told he would not start against Denmark. Ronaldo had written on social media: "In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated."

Jesus, who also managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, said: "If he wants to, he'll return to the national team. We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who's going to decide."

CONTEXT
Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 Portugal appearances — both world records — and plays for Al-Nassr. He started Portugal's opening 1-0 win over Wales in this Nations League window but was named as a substitute against Norway and "was apparently angered at being made to warm up during the second half - and then not brought on." It was the first time he had been an unused substitute for Portugal in a competitive game since 2008.

With Ronaldo out of the team, AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos has scored in all three of his starts.

TEAM-MATES' REACTIONS
After the win that secured Portugal a place in the Nations League quarter-finals, Joao Cancelo told RTP: "Cristiano is our captain, the best player Portugal has ever had. Things will certainly end in the best way [with him] but the important thing is the four victories."

Nuno Mendes said: "Any player who comes to the national team is welcome, obviously. If Cris returns, we'll be here to receive him with open arms."

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Portugal host Denmark on 14 November, then visit Wales three days later.
