Jota returns as Celtic beat Motherwell 2-0 to reclaim Premiership lead
WHAT HAPPENED
Celtic ended a troubled run with a 2-0 win at Motherwell, returning to the top of the Scottish Premiership. Camilo Duran opened the scoring early and Benjamin Nygren sealed the victory in the second half.

Jota comeback
The result was underlined by the long-awaited return of winger Jota, who came on as a 74th-minute substitute after almost 18 months out following a cruciate ligament injury sustained at Tannadice in April 2025. He produced a lively cameo and nearly set up a chance with his first touches. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Jota said: "I was waiting on this for a long time. Just happy to be back. I've been working hard, the guys have been helping me as well. It was just the normal nerves, but after I stepped on the pitch everything goes well." He described the mental toll of his absence: "Imagine if someone takes away your child and I've got my child back today - that's how I've been feeling the last year. I found my child again today and I just want to keep it as long as I can."

Broader picture
The win provided relief for a club that had endured three straight defeats before the international break, two of them against Rangers, and a period of public unrest that included a protest aimed at Celtic's largest shareholder, Dermot Desmond, during the Alfred Dunhill Links golf tournament in St Andrews. Manager Martin O'Neill had at one point questioned whether he had the energy to continue after the Parkhead defeat by Rangers before committing to stay on. On the post-match mood, O'Neill said: "Of course, there was a lot of noise and a lot of it we brought on ourselves as well too. So, nice to win. We have to take the criticism at the time. We lost three matches in a week - two to our big rivals. But we fought back today and let's see what Thursday brings." Former Scotland defender Willie Miller commented: "I could only imagine the pressure on Martin O'Neill - I know what it's like in Glasgow if you are beaten by Rangers twice. But it seems like he's got his mojo back and is back to his old form and that's what results do."

Match detail and finishing
Celtic created numerous chances but were kept at bay by Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen, who made 12 saves. O'Neill highlighted the importance of the opener: "The first goal's really important, a great goal by Camilo and it settled us down which was good."

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Celtic face a tougher test in the Europa League on Thursday against Benfica. They also have domestic duties to come, hosting Hearts, before another European trip to face Celta Vigo.
