Leeds close in on Nice defender Bard
WHAT HAPPENED
Leeds United are close to securing Melvin Bard from Nice on an initial loan with an option to make the transfer permanent. The club will pay €1m up front and would have the option to sign the 25-year-old left-back for an additional €5m at the end of the season.

Bard is due at Elland Road on deadline day to undergo a medical. The move is intended to bolster Leeds’ options at full-back, where Gabriel Gudmundsson is currently the only left-sided regular available to manager Daniel Farke.

KEY CONTEXT
Leeds needed a replacement because Willy Gnonto is in Florence finalising a transfer to Fiorentina; his loan back to Serie A depended on Leeds securing reinforcement. The club also pursued Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk as an option but that deal was taken over by Tottenham. Bard would become Leeds’ sixth senior signing of the summer after James Trafford, Michael Zetterer, Nico Elvedi, Tarik Muharemovic and Harry Wilson.

WHY IT MATTERS
Adding Bard would give Leeds extra cover at left-back ahead of the new season, addressing a positional shortfall highlighted by Gudmundsson being the only current left-sided option. Completing a short-term loan with a purchase option allows Leeds to assess Bard before committing a larger fee. The signing also directly links to the club’s ability to finalise Gnonto’s move to Fiorentina, which was conditional on finding a replacement.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- Whether Bard passes his medical at Elland Road and the loan is formally completed.
