Liverpool academy links with Iraola, strict rules and recent youth exits
Alex Inglethorpe, Liverpool’s academy director, says the club is focused on preparing youngsters for the first team while maintaining strict day-to-day standards and managing a shifting transfer market.

Inglethorpe keeps a framed photo in his office gifted by Trent Alexander-Arnold — the pair pictured watching a game in 2019. Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid last year after 20 years on Merseyside; he joined Liverpool as a six-year-old in 2004 and went on to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with the club.

WHAT HAPPENED
- New first-team boss Andoni Iraola spent time watching the academy in his first week, and several academy products — Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, Lewis Koumas and James McConnell — have featured for the senior side this season. Inglethorpe says: "the first team pitch is only 300 metres away from the academy building in Kirkby, but the journey might take 10 years to get there."

- Daily routines at Kirkby include handing in phones each morning. Contracts also contain a clause limiting the engine size of cars driven into academy premises. Inglethorpe explains the thinking: "Often before you've kicked a ball, the car you drive or the watch you wear can have an impact on how you're thought of - and that could be first team staff or players looking at you."

- The club says its wage structure is currently under review. Inglethorpe added: "It's always a compliment when other clubs want your players as it means you're doing something right," and warned the market for 16-year-olds has been "distorted because of Brexit" with movement feeling "a little more extreme now."

TRANSFERS, COMPENSATION AND TRIBUNAL
- Manchester United signed 16-year-old winger Isaac Konde from Liverpool on a one-year scholarship followed by a five-year professional deal; both clubs are now in talks over a compensation package.

- In February, a tribunal ruled Liverpool must pay at least £2.8m to Chelsea for Rio Ngumoha. The 18-year-old left Chelsea in September 2024 to join Liverpool and signed his first professional contract a year later.

LOCAL IDENTITY
- Curtis Jones moved to Inter Milan in the summer, leaving Liverpool without a first-team player born in the city. Inglethorpe said: "I acknowledge the fact that ideally Liverpool would love to have a team full of Scousers," and added: "So if you are fearless, passionate, play tough and demonstrate those qualities, then it doesn't matter if you've come from an L1 postcode and got a purple bin or not. That's the beauty of the club and the crowd."

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
- Liverpool and Manchester United remain in talks over compensation for Isaac Konde. The club continues to review its wage structure.
