Luka Modric 'ashamed' after Croatia humbled 7-0 by England
WHAT HAPPENED
Croatia captain Luka Modric said he felt "ashamed" after his side were beaten 7-0 at home by England in a Nations League match in Rijeka. Modric described the outing as a "catastrophic night" and said: "You can't play football like that... we looked like we had four or five players less."

MATCH DETAILS
England led 5-0 by the time Modric was substituted in the 57th minute. Harry Kane scored twice, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers each scored once, and Bukayo Saka added two goals as the visitors completed a 7-0 victory.

CONTEXT
Modric, 41, was making his 205th appearance for Croatia after recently agreeing to extend his international career under returning manager Slaven Bilic. Croatia had opened Bilic's second spell with a 2-1 Nations League win away to the Czech Republic, then lost 4-1 away to Spain, and were level on points with England in Group A3 before Saturday's defeat.

REACTION
Modric said it was the first time in 20 years of international football that he had felt such emotion: "I've been here for 20 years, but for the first time I feel ashamed after a game." He added: "It is difficult to find an explanation for such a performance without duels, fouls, aggressiveness, togetherness... Losing like this and squandering the reputation we've built over the years is unacceptable."

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Croatia, third in the table after the defeat, host Spain in Split on Tuesday. They will finish their Nations League campaign away to England on 12 November and at home to the Czech Republic on 15 November.
