Man City beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield as season remains in limbo
Manchester City produced a commanding 3-0 victory at Anfield, but the result arrived against the backdrop of a Premier League season put into uncertainty after City were found guilty of 114 charges over financial-rule breaches.

WHAT HAPPENED
City controlled the match and secured a second-half three-goal win at Liverpool. Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored the goals that sealed the result. The victory extended City’s lead to three points at the top of the table.

THE CONTEXT
This was City’s first game since the Premier League verdict covering alleged breaches between 2009-10 and 2017-18. The club has appealed the decision. The report noted that potential sanctions suggested have included Premier League relegation or a record points deduction, but the final outcome remains unresolved.

Anfield provided a febrile reception: Liverpool fans showed visible disgust, reflecting a sustained sense of injustice after finishing second to City in 2013-14, 2018-19 and 2021-22. City avoided an obvious confrontation on arrival by using a staff and contractors’ entrance. At the final whistle, as emotions ran high, Anfield’s DJ played Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies.”

REACTIONS
City’s interim head coach Enzo Maresca said: "We knew there was going to be noise but we need to make our own noise by winning games. We need to learn to deal with the noise but the message is to win games." He added he focuses on "things I can control" such as gameplan and training.

Haaland reflected on the occasion: "For every single person part of Manchester City, every fan, this is a lovely moment that will stay with us for a long time. It was tough. It was hard, but we showed amazing character from back to front. So proud of everyone." Photographs from the match showed Haaland emotional in front of City supporters, including his father Alf-Inge.

WHAT IT MEANS
Until the appeal and any decisions are resolved, every result involving Manchester City will carry added uncertainty. The club, players and staff celebrated the win on the night, but the wider status of the campaign remains unsettled while the case progresses.
