Olid's Manchester United show defensive progress in 1-1 draw at Arsenal

Manchester United produced a much-improved defensive performance to take a 1-1 draw at Arsenal, only to be denied victory by a stoppage-time leveller. Julia Zigiotti scored midway through the second half after a mistake by Georgia Stanway, while Smilla Holmberg's late volley forced the share of the points.
KEY CONTEXT
Eva Olid, 41, took charge of United in the summer after leaving Hearts and pledged to install a possession-based, attacking style. United began the season with two defeats, including a 5-0 home loss to Chelsea, and had managed just two shots on target and under 40% possession in each of those opening matches.
Against Arsenal Olid prioritised defensive shape. United finished the game having won more duels, made more tackles and completed more interceptions than their hosts, despite holding only 40% possession. Olid said: "It has been an intense week because there were a lot of emotions from players and staff. Nobody wants to lose 5-0." She added that the focus had been on defensive shape: "It's trying to get them more confidence." On the squad's longer-term style she said: "I think the attacking will come... If you implement a new style of play, you need time."
INDIVIDUALS AND OBSERVATIONS
Midfielder Simi Awujo was singled out for a strong first-half showing, while Andrea Medina was noted for effective tracking back. Former England midfielder Izzy Christiansen told Sky Sports: "Manchester United have done a terrific job defensively."
WHY IT MATTERS
The draw represented a clear change from United's early-season displays and provided Olid with a defensive foundation she said she wanted to build on while implementing her preferred attacking approach.
