Peterborough appoint Robbie Savage — expect 'relentless', attacking football
WHAT HAPPENED
Peterborough United have appointed Robbie Savage as their new manager. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: "Excitement is the word I can use to describe the appointment of Robbie Savage as our new manager," praising Savage's personality, mindset and hunger to "fix our issues and get confidence back into our talented squad."

A RAPID RISE
Savage's move to League One marks a fast managerial ascent. He began his coaching career at Macclesfield FC in the Northern Premier League Premier Division and, in one season, oversaw a campaign that produced 109 goals and 109 points to secure promotion to the National League North. He joined Forest Green Rovers in July 2025 and, in his only full season there, led the club into the National League play-offs before they were beaten by Boreham Wood.

STYLE AND RECORD
BBC Radio Gloucestershire reporter Paul Furley summarised Savage's style as "relentless." Savage has said he loves "entertaining, attacking football" and that he would "rather win games 5-4 than 1-0." Furley notes Savage favours a 4-2-3-1 formation. At Forest Green, goals scored rose from 69 to 82 compared with the previous season, while goals conceded increased from 42 to 52. On the touchline, Savage is described as energetic, keeping team talks short and emphasising his connection with supporters.

IMMEDIATE CONTEXT
When Savage left Forest Green this season the club sat 13th after 11 matches, with four wins, three draws and four defeats. Peterborough are second bottom of League One, and the club's chairman has highlighted confidence-restoration and addressing the squad's issues as priorities. With the January transfer window still around three months away, the chairman and fans may need patience before wholesale changes are possible.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Savage inherits a side in League One's lower reaches and a timetable that places significant transfer activity after the January window. How quickly his preferred style and any squad adjustments affect results will depend on steps the club takes before and during that window.
