PFA chief says Chelsea's Cole Palmer 'victim' of 'sick' match calendar

PFA chief executive Maheta Molango said Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is a "victim of the calendar" and described the system as "sick" after Palmer withdrew from the England squad. Molango made the comments at the Fifpro performance summit in London.
KEY POINTS
- Molango argued Palmer's withdrawal underlines an unsustainable schedule that has turned international selection into a "survival of the fittest." He asked why players who prize national-team call-ups were having to pull out, saying "your body puts a limit to it. You cannot cheat biology."
- Five players — Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento — pulled out of the squad ahead of the latest international window.
- Molango pointed to recent withdrawals from other European teams, naming Germany's Kai Havertz, Dutch striker Brian Brobbey and France captain Kylian Mbappe as further examples of the problem.
- In response to Palmer withdrawing for what was described as "load management," Thomas Tuchel said the forward "misses too many opportunities." Molango criticised that stance.
WHY IT MATTERS
Molango and players' unions including the PFA and Fifpro have repeatedly warned that a congested match calendar harms player welfare and performance. He said the issue reflects an industry that "ultimately revolves around obtaining votes and power consolidation."
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Molango proposed a mandatory three-week summer break and a three-week "retraining" period each summer. Rebecca Caplehorn, the Premier League's chief football officer, said she was supportive of the idea in principle but that it "just doesn't fit into the current calendar" and could not be delivered without regulatory and calendar changes.
