KEY MATCHES
- Rangers vs Kilmarnock (Ibrox, Saturday): Rangers come into the weekend having won six straight matches before the break. Kilmarnock travel hoping to become the first away league side to score at Ibrox since early August. The fixture also renews the managerial duel between former Rangers and Scotland team-mates Derek McInnes and Neil McCann.
- Dundee United vs Hibernian (Tannadice, Saturday): New Hibs manager Marink Reedijk will take charge of his first match on Saturday. Reedijk joined late last month and did not have the benefit of a transfer window; he has promised "brave, intense and committed" football. Hibs sit third-bottom in the table — a point above Falkirk and two above Kilmarnock. David Gray left behind an experienced squad including young striker Owen Elding.
- Hearts vs St Mirren (Tynecastle, Saturday): Hearts have struggled recently, losing at Falkirk and drawing away to Kilmarnock, and will want to stop that run when St Mirren visit. St Mirren began the season strongly but have lost each of their past three games.
- Falkirk vs Dundee (Saturday): Dundee go into the weekend three points off Hearts and come after a morale-boosting win over Motherwell before the break. Falkirk are experiencing a mini-revival following dropped points earlier in the campaign.
- Motherwell vs Celtic (Fir Park, Sunday): Celtic have lost their past three fixtures in all competitions, including league and cup defeats to Rangers, but remain two points clear at the top as they travel to Fir Park on Sunday.
WHY IT MATTERS
The break has given managers extra preparation time and players a period to rest and recharge. For clubs such as Hibs, the weekend will offer a first look at a new manager in competitive action; for title contenders and rivals it marks the point at which mid-season momentum will be reassessed.
