Rangers lose Shankland for up to four months

Rangers captain Lawrence Shankland has been ruled out for up to four months after scans revealed a 2cm hamstring tear. The injury is a recurrence of the hamstring problem he suffered while at Hearts last season; he missed nine weeks with that previous issue.
Manager Derek McInnes said Shankland is undergoing follow-up imaging in London to determine whether surgery is required. A surgical route could add several weeks to the recovery but may reduce the chance of re-injury; a final decision was expected within around 48 hours. McInnes estimated the recovery window as roughly three months at best, up to about four months at worst.
KEY CONTEXT
- Shankland had started the season well for Rangers, scoring four goals in 10 appearances and wearing the captain’s armband.
- He was substituted early in Rangers’ 1-0 home win over Motherwell, with replacement Ryan Naderi converting the decisive goal.
- With Youssef Chermiti already facing a lengthy lay-off after anterior cruciate ligament damage suffered last month, Rangers are now without their two leading strikers.
- Shankland’s absence will also rule him out of Scotland’s upcoming Nations League fixtures from late September to mid-November; Scotland, under new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli, face North Macedonia, Slovenia and Switzerland home and away this autumn.
WHY IT MATTERS
Losing Shankland removes a forward who has been one of Rangers’ most reliable scorers: his minutes-per-goal rate over the past season (including his time at Hearts) is considerably better than some teammates, and he had been contributing important goals shortly before the injury. Paired with Chermiti’s ACL problem, the club’s attacking options are significantly weakened, forcing other forwards to step up and testing Rangers’ squad depth across a congested fixture list that includes domestic cup matches, league games and a run of five matches in October followed by further games in November and December.
WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- The outcome of the specialist’s assessment and whether Shankland will undergo surgery; the club expected a decision within roughly 48 hours of the scan.
- How McInnes manages the forward options while Shankland and Chermiti are absent: youngsters and other signings (including Bojan Miovski, Kevin Kelsy and Ryan Naderi) were mentioned as candidates to fill the gap.
- Availability of fringe players: winger Daisuke Yokota will miss the next match with a groin problem, while left-back Tuur Rommens has returned to training and may be available later this month.
- Shankland’s unavailability for Scotland’s Nations League schedule and the impact on the national team’s forward selection under Pocognoli.
