Senegal job an 'absolute dream' for new boss Vieira
September 18, 2026 19:21
Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of Senegal, describing the job as an "honour" and a personal homecoming. The 50-year-old, who was born in Senegal but played for France — winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 — was formally unveiled by the Teranga Lions in Dakar on Friday. Vieira arrives after spells in club management with New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa and said he accepted the job quickly because of the quality of the current playing group.
At his first press conference Vieira set out his immediate intentions: to impose a clear structure, to build a team capable of playing with intensity and aggression, and to preserve the squad’s existing strengths such as unity and resilience. He vowed to work "heart and soul" to restore and protect the team’s pride.
KEY CONTEXT
Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw following a turbulent spell for Senegal on the international stage. The Teranga Lions were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32, surrendering a 2-0 lead late in normal time and ultimately losing 3-2 after extra time to Belgium. Earlier in 2025 Senegal were involved in the Africa Cup of Nations final with Morocco that finished 1-0 after extra time; however, the final’s aftermath saw some Senegal players and staff walk off in protest at a penalty decision and the question of who retains the trophy has been passed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Vieira’s appointment coincides with some notable personnel changes: long-serving first-choice goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has retired from international duty, and captain Sadio Mané will miss the upcoming fixtures because of what Vieira described as "a bit of a physical issue."
WHY IT MATTERS
Senegal are described by Vieira as one of the leading nations in world football, and expectations have risen compared with a decade or more ago. The new coach’s insistence on structure, intensity and continuity speaks to a desire to consolidate progress rather than overhaul the team. With World Cup and AFCON reputation at stake, who leads the side and how quickly he can implement his methods will shape Senegal’s short-term results and longer-term identity.
The timing is also important: Vieira is taking charge at the start of a competitive period — AFCON qualifying — meaning early results and squad management will be scrutinised. Losing experienced figures such as Mendy and managing absences like Mané’s are concrete challenges his regime must handle immediately.
WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- The outcome of the Court of Arbitration for Sport review into the 2025 AFCON final and the trophy’s final destination.
- Vieira’s first competitive matches in charge: Senegal have two AFCON qualifying fixtures in this international window (the home match against Mozambique was moved and will now be played in Maputo) followed by an away game against Ethiopia on 29 September, two qualifiers in November and the last two rounds in March 2027.
- How Vieira addresses squad selection and formation without Édouard Mendy and in the short term without Sadio Mané.
- Whether Vieira’s promised "very precise structure" and emphasis on intensity and aggression are apparent in team selection and results from the opening qualifiers.
