Swansea top tight Championship after eight games as goals hit 277
After a 37-day opening run, the Championship pauses for international fixtures with little to separate the sides. Seven points cover the top 15 after eight matches, and Swansea lead the pack on 17 points.

WHAT HAPPENED
- The table is unusually congested: only seven points separate places one to 15. Wolves and Pompey still have a game in hand following Carabao Cup commitments.
- Swansea top the standings with 17 points. Since the Championship was rebranded in 2004, only once had a side led after eight matches with fewer than 17 points (Brighton had 16 in 2012 and later finished fourth, losing in the play-offs).
- Of the six previous clubs who had 17 points at this stage, only Leeds (2019-20) and Sheffield United (2022-23) went on to win promotion; three of the other four did not finish in the top 10.

GOAL TRENDS
- There have been 277 goals so far this season — 36 more than at the same point last year despite one fewer match played — the second-highest total at this stage since the 2004-05 rebrand.
- The data points to more direct attacking play and productive wide areas: 47 goals have come from crosses (only once in the past nine seasons have more been recorded at this stage), and 44 of those were headers — the most in five seasons at this point.
- Throw-ins have also yielded nine goals, the second-highest total in 14 seasons at this stage (only last season’s 12 was higher). Between 2013-14 and 2020-21, just 14 goals across those eight seasons came from throw-ins by this stage.
- Individually, Bristol City’s on-loan full-back Rio Cardines leads Europe’s top leagues with six assists.

BURNLEY AND SLOW STARTERS
- Burnley sit bottom after eight matches with four points and no wins. Nicky Hayen took charge 29 days before the Clarets’ opening fixture; 75 days on, the club remain without a victory.
- The source traces recent turbulence at Burnley: promotion under Vincent Kompany in 2022-23 with 101 points was followed by relegation with 24 points; promotion again under Scott Parker with 100 points and a 16-goal defensive record was followed by another relegation last season. Parker subsequently departed.
- Preston, Cardiff and Derby are also averaging fewer than a point per game at this early stage.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
- Standout moments include Dom Ballard’s back-heeled volley at Birmingham, noted as a contender for goal of the season.
