Tonda Eckert: 'It's changed my life' after FA suspended ban over Spygate
October 8, 2026 19:21
WHAT HAPPENED
Eckert faced the media at Southampton's Staplewood training ground following an FA investigation that lasted more than four months. The commission had proposed a three-month ban but instead imposed a six-week suspended ban and fine, noting "considerable mitigation" and "genuine contrition". The FA has not confirmed whether it will appeal the commission's ruling.
KEY CONTEXT
Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs in May after admitting spying on training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before the play-off semi-final. The episode drew criticism from figures around the game; Cambridge United head coach Neil Harris said Eckert "should get a ban and a huge ban" before the verdict.
Eckert on the aftermath
"It's tough. It changes your life," Eckert said. He described relief at being able to draw a line under the case for himself and those close to him, and thanked the club and people who supported him. He also said the owner's public backing was a decision for the club and that he had to decide over the summer whether he had the energy to take the project forward.
LOOKING AHEAD
Eckert was relaxed in the press conference and spoke briefly about the upcoming match against rivals Portsmouth on Sunday (12:00 BST). Image captions note he has won 30 of his 50 games in charge of the Saints.
