Tuchel's rebuild: Kane-led fab four emerges as England unearth midfield options
WHAT HAPPENED
Thomas Tuchel has used the extended international break and four Nations League matches to begin a rebuild of his England squad after the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. The period has underlined two clear developments: a potent attacking quartet around captain Harry Kane, and increased depth across central midfield.

A FABULOUS FRONT FOUR
Kane marked his 125th England appearance and added to his international goals tally; he now has 91 goals for his country and has equalled Peter Shilton's total of 125 caps. Around him Tuchel appears to have found a natural attacking group. Anthony Gordon, who moved from Newcastle to Barcelona, has become a key creator with pace; Bukayo Saka has looked rejuvenated after a World Cup-affected season and scored twice in Croatia; and Jude Bellingham, 23, is cited in the camp as England's player of the year. The selection environment has changed too: Cole Palmer's withdrawal from the squad opened space for others to consolidate their places, while Morgan Gibbs-White cut short a family holiday to rejoin the squad after initially being excluded. Young talents such as Chelsea's Morgan Rogers and Liverpool's 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha were also flagged as future international contenders.

MIDFIELD DEPTH AND SETBACKS
Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott impressed on his England debut with energetic link play and range of passing, but suffered a thigh injury that ruled him out of the Czech Republic match. Bournemouth fear he will be sidelined for two months. Tuchel stressed there is competition in midfield, saying: "Is Declan still for me a fixed point in my team? Yes, but some other players are coming and impressing and it's an ongoing competition." Declan Rice is being managed after injury. Other midfield options highlighted during the break include Manchester City's Elliot Anderson (described in the coverage as City's £116m summer purchase from Nottingham Forest), Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Everton's James Garner, whom Tuchel has called England's "mini Valverde".

WHY IT MATTERS
The Nations League window has given Tuchel live opportunities to assess personnel and to rebuild confidence after heavy criticism of his defensive approach in Atlanta. The combination of an in-form attacking group centred on Kane and a broader pool of midfielders provides Tuchel with selection choices as he manages player loads and injuries.
