Villa sign goalkeeper Suzuki and left-back Ruggeri

Aston Villa have completed the signings of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri. Suzuki has arrived from Parma for a fee reported to be about £30m, while Ruggeri has joined from Atletico Madrid for around £17m.
The moves come as Villa's planned goalkeeper switch involving Emi Martinez collapsed after the club and Juventus failed to agree a fee; Martinez’s future at Villa is described as uncertain. Villa view Suzuki as a long-term first-choice option, and Ruggeri is expected to fill the vacancy left by Lucas Digne, who moved to Paris Saint-Germain on 9 August.
KEY CONTEXT
Suzuki, 23, is an established Japan international with 28 caps and spent two seasons at Parma, making 59 appearances and helping them finish 13th in Serie A last season. Villa regard him as a potential decade-long No.1.
Ruggeri, 24, has represented Italy at youth levels but has not yet been capped at senior level. He made more than 100 appearances for Atalanta and was part of their 2024 Europa League success before moving to Atletico Madrid last summer.
Both new signings are available for selection and could feature in Villa’s Premier League opener at Brighton on Sunday.
WHY IT MATTERS
Villa have addressed two defensive positions in one transfer window: the goalkeeper role—now with a young international seen as a long-term solution—and left-back, replacing an established first choice who departed for PSG. The club’s recruitment signals a shift toward younger recruits with top-flight and continental experience.
Suzuki arrives with praise from a former coach highlighting his physical power, shot-stopping and distribution with both hands and feet, plus strong mental focus—attributes Villa will need as they compare any incoming keeper with the outgoing Martinez, who helped them to European success and is a World Cup winner.
