Watkins completes £51m move to Saudi side Al-Hilal
WHAT HAPPENED
Ollie Watkins has completed a transfer from Aston Villa to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for a reported fee of £51m, signing a three-year contract. The 30-year-old forward leaves Villa after six seasons, during which he became the club's leading Premier League goalscorer with 91 strikes.

The move followed Watkins making himself unavailable for Villa's Premier League opener against Brighton; manager Unai Emery said Watkins apologised for that absence. Emery also paid tribute to Watkins as he departed, amid a summer of several first-team exits from Villa.

KEY CONTEXT
Watkins played a key part in Villa’s rise under Unai Emery, helping the club become regular top-six challengers and contributing to their Europa League triumph — Villa’s first European trophy in 44 years. His departure comes alongside other summer outs: Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have all left Villa this window.

At Al-Hilal, Watkins will join Crysencio Summerville, who left West Ham after their relegation from the Premier League. Meanwhile Villa have been active in the market: they twice broke their transfer record in July — signing Johan Manzambi and then completing a £65m deal for Bayern Munich striker Nicolas Jackson, who is seen as Watkins’ replacement — and have also added Joao Gomes, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and Matteo Ruggeri as the squad is reshaped.

WHY IT MATTERS
A club-record Premier League goalscorer leaving is a significant squad change for Villa, removing a leading attacking figure who helped deliver major recent success. The transfer is part of a broader overhaul at Villa as they balance incoming and outgoing deals, actions the club says are linked to meeting UEFA’s squad cost-ratio requirements.

For Al-Hilal, adding Watkins continues the club’s recruitment of players from the Premier League and strengthens their attacking options alongside incoming Summerville.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- Taylor Harwood-Bellis: Villa are close to agreeing a move for the Southampton defender for a package worth up to £29m (initial £25m plus £4m in add-ons), but the transfer remains subject to finalising minor details and is expected to be completed before the transfer deadline.
- How Villa integrate recent recruits — notably Nicolas Jackson and Johan Manzambi — as replacements and how the squad adjustments satisfy UEFA’s squad cost-ratio rules.
- How Watkins adapts to Al-Hilal alongside Summerville and the impact he has in the Saudi Pro League.
