What will Jackson bring to Villa with Watkins set for exit?
WHAT HAPPENED
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £65m, while Ollie Watkins appears set to move to Saudi side Al-Hilal. The club’s transfer window has already seen several departures and arrivals as Unai Emery reshapes his squad.

The changes were underlined by Villa’s 4-0 opening-day defeat at Brighton, a match in which Watkins was unavailable and the club started without a recognised centre-forward because Tammy Abraham and teenager Brian Madjo were injured.

KEY CONTEXT
Jackson, 25, spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Bayern Munich and joins other recent recruits including Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, Zion Suzuki and Matteo Ruggeri. His arrival makes him Villa’s record signing, overtaking Manzambi. The club has already lost key players this summer, including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne. Watkins leaves after six years at Villa, during which he scored 108 goals in 278 appearances and was a central figure under Emery.

WHY IT MATTERS
Statistically Jackson profiles as a different kind of centre-forward to Watkins. Last season at Bayern he registered 11 goals and three assists in 1,320 minutes, averaging 1.0 goal involvements per 90 minutes versus Watkins’ 0.6 per 90 in his last season at Villa. Jackson produced more attacking volume: higher shots per 90 (3.8 v 2.6), shots on target per 90 (2.2 v 1.2), higher xG per 90 (0.7 v 0.5) and more touches in the opposition box (8.5 v 5.6). He also recorded substantially more open-play touches (46.6 per 90 v 29.5) and completed almost double the passes (24 per 90 v 11.6), showing greater involvement in build-up and progression than Watkins.
