BBC pundit Troy Deeney published his latest Premier League "team and manager of the week" following this round of fixtures. His XI and the chosen manager cover players from Hull, Sunderland, Everton, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle and Chelsea.
Deeney picked Konstantinos Tzolakis (Hull) in goal and named Newcastle's Matthias Jaissle his manager of the week. Other selections included Bruno Fernandes, Erling Haaland, Joao Pedro and a mix of defenders and attackers praised for recent performances.
KEY CONTEXT
- Deeney produces this selection after every round of Premier League matches during the season.
- His choices combine match-defining individual contributions (for example, goal tallies and assists) with players he views as integral to team shape and effort.
- Several picks highlight unexpected or emerging stories from the opening weeks, such as Hull’s defensive organisation and Joao Pedro’s hot start at Chelsea despite not being picked for the World Cup (as noted in Deeney’s remarks).
WHY IT MATTERS
- The team underlines which players Deeney believes are influencing results beyond headline scorers: he credited James McAtee with controlling play at Anfield and praised Hull’s defensive core for the club’s strong start.
