Why have the Premier League announced Christmas fixtures early?
WHAT HAPPENED
The Premier League has published the schedule for fixtures over the festive period of the 2026-27 season earlier than planned. The league released confirmed dates and kick-off times for rounds 17–20, covering matches from Boxing Day (26 December) through to Thursday 7 January.

The move came after the league and its broadcast partners agreed to accelerate the live-match selection for those rounds. The announcement also notes consultation with the Football Supporters' Association and club Fan Advisory Boards. There will be seven fixtures on Boxing Day and one on New Year’s Day.

KEY CONTEXT
- The full set of finalised fixture dates and times for game weeks 13–20 had originally been due to be made public in the week commencing Monday 19 October.
- The early release only covers rounds 17–20 (26 December to 7 January); fixtures scheduled earlier in December and those in November will be revealed on their originally planned dates.
- The league says the earlier publication was agreed with broadcast partners and followed input from supporter groups and club advisory boards.

WHY IT MATTERS
- The earlier announcement gives supporters more than three months’ notice to arrange travel and other plans for a traditionally busy period on the football calendar.
- It also provides broadcasters and clubs with advanced certainty over live-match selections for a congested holiday window, helping logistical planning for fixtures taking place across several days.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- The remaining fixtures for earlier December match rounds, and those in November, will still be announced on their scheduled dates; fans and clubs should expect the rest of the calendar to be published in the normal timetable.
- Attention will be on how broadcasters and clubs finalise operations and travel arrangements now that the Boxing Day–7 January schedule is confirmed.
