Worrall out to make Wrexham point after Burnley exit
September 8, 2026 04:20
WHAT HAPPENED
Worrall left Burnley on deadline day after making just eight league starts in two years at Turf Moor. He said injuries hampered his chances and that he felt "extremely frustrated" at not playing more in the Premier League under Scott Parker, adding that for "whatever reason I was just not in the eye of the manager or the club." He also suggested there was "more than meets the eye" regarding team selection at Burnley.
KEY CONTEXT
The 29-year-old centre-back skippered Nottingham Forest to play-off success in 2024 and says he wants to avoid injury and help Wrexham push for promotion. Since his arrival he has watched two successive clean sheets from the bench and is "aiming for a first start" for Phil Parkinson's side.
Wrexham have followed a 3-0 win at Millwall with a goalless draw at Swansea and held a longer team meeting on Monday after two long away trips. Parkinson has praised Worrall's early influence, saying he has "been fantastic for us in terms of his personality." Parkinson added he will have a plan for whatever Burnley put out and that the division is "very tight and very competitive."
Burnley, relegated last season, are yet to win this campaign and are described in the source as "struggling at the bottom of the second tier". The Clarets have undergone a transition under Nicky Hayen, which Worrall said makes their early-season struggles unsurprising, though he believes the squad "have the quality to 'click and come good.'"
Both clubs were active on deadline day: Burnley signed former England and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy as a free agent after his exit from Cremonese, while Wrexham added Sheffield United's Callum O'Hare.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Worrall could face team-mates he left a week ago when Wrexham host Burnley on Tuesday (19:45 BST). He expects to bide his time for a starting place while aiming to show he can contribute to Wrexham's promotion ambitions.
