Xabi Alonso confirms Chelsea duo not ready to face Leeds United

WHAT HAPPENED
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso confirmed that Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha are unlikely to make their club debuts imminently, telling reporters they are not ready to be included yet. The remarks came as Chelsea prepare for a Carabao Cup third-round tie against Leeds United, scheduled the day after Alonso’s media briefing.

The comments followed Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal last weekend, when the visitors surrendered a lead at the Emirates Stadium.

KEY CONTEXT
- Henderson and Emegha have not been named in any Chelsea matchday squads so far this season.
- The upcoming fixture is a domestic cup tie (Carabao Cup, third round) against an improving Leeds side.
- Alonso has acknowledged the team has started the season well overall but highlighted room for defensive improvement.

WHY IT MATTERS
If Henderson and Emegha remain unavailable, Chelsea will have to manage squad selection without two players who have yet to make competitive appearances for the club, potentially affecting rotation and options for the cup tie. Alonso has also made keeping a clean sheet a stated priority ahead of facing Leeds, underlining defensive concerns after the recent loss to Arsenal.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
- Alonso indicated availability is still unresolved and asked to be checked again on Friday; the manager’s update then will clarify whether either player can be included in forthcoming squads.
- The Carabao Cup tie against Leeds will test Chelsea’s defensive progress and provide a first gauge of how Alonso will rotate his squad without those two players.
