Youthful Pocognoli the brave choice for Scotland job
WHAT HAPPENED
Sebastien Pocognoli, 39, has been appointed Scotland head coach on an initial two-year contract. He arrives with a stated desire to implement a high-energy, front-foot style — high press, intense running and possession control — and has begun contacting players as he prepares for the Nations League.

The choice represents a clear break with the previous era under Steve Clarke: Pocognoli is markedly younger and promises a different tactical identity. Kevin Mirallas, who worked with him previously, has been reported as likely to join his backroom team.

KEY CONTEXT
Pocognoli’s senior managerial experience amounts to 107 matches split between Union Saint-Gilloise (USG) and Monaco. He took USG to a historic Belgian league title in 2024–25 and also won a cup in his first season as a senior manager, earning manager of the year recognition, before leaving for Monaco where he lasted 38 matches and was dismissed.
